Resource Efficiency and Waste Management Training Courses

As sustainability becomes an ever-larger topic of conversation, Businesses and Organisations are becoming more and more aware of the need to increase carbon savings by providing waste management training among their employees, and a greater knowledge of resource efficiency.

It goes without saying too, that effective resource efficiency management can help save a lot of money in other areas. Energy and water are a very large expense for a lot of businesses, and a poor knowledge of waste management can lead to unexpected fines through things like improper disposal of chemicals.

To help provide the skills and knowledge required to bridge these gaps in knowledge, Rio Learn has developed courses alongside the Energy Institute and the Future Water Association. These courses are developed to improve resource efficiency and complement our waste management training courses.

Food WasteJourney of Food [45 minutes]

£35 per learner, not including VAT

With food waste being a significant contributor to carbon emissions, reducing the amount of wasted food is as important now as it has ever been.

As a part of our waste management training course selection, this module looks out across the food chain at what is being done and what can be done to reduce food (and packaging) waste.

The journey starts by looking at sustainable agriculture and farming. It moves on to see how manufacturing food waste can be reduced and what supermarkets and retail establishments are doing as well. Lots of food waste stems from the consumer and therefore our journey takes in the use of food at home and how waste can be prevented, before finishing with looking at the waste industry and what they are doing to prevent food waste from becoming landfill.

The course is suitable for anyone working within agriculture, food manufacturing, retail and catering, and the waste industry; or simply for those wanting to learn more about food waste.

Find out more about the Journey of Food course here.

Learning Outcomes

By completing this Journey of Food course, you will be able to:
  • Think sustainability. Prevent food waste by understanding from farm to fork concepts
  • Apply techniques examined from a range of scenarios to help eliminate food waste and encourage sustainability
  • Understand and share information on home, agricultural, food manufacturing, retail and catering, and waste industry environments
  • Share knowledge on how and why food waste is generated, and actions required to reduce waste, save money and become more sustainable

FAQs

What is meant by resource efficiency?

Resource efficiency is the act of using the limited resources provided by the planet in a sustainable manner. A vital element of this is also finding a way to reduce the impacts of the extracting, manufacturing, and distributing that resource on the environment. It is difficult if not impossible to achieve true resource efficiency with the volume of people and businesses that are all vying for resources. Nonetheless, courses like our ResourceAware programme are the perfect starting point to help you make positive steps towards sustainable living, both at home and in the workplace.

How important is resource efficiency?

Resource efficiency is becoming more and more important as the planet starts to heat up and the conversation of sustainability gains further traction. For businesses and organisations, there are multiple benefits to introducing waste management accreditations and resource efficiency training to the workplace.

Helps businesses to stand out

A big and sometimes controversial factor when considering resource efficiency is how it affects the standing of your business from a social standpoint. More and more, businesses that promote good resource management practices are being seen as sustainability leaders, which in today’s world of rapidly changing environmental sensibilities, can equate to more customers and clients.

Saves money

Finding ways to reuse, sell on, or otherwise save on resource expenditure can save a lot of money. Consider also not just the resources used in manufacturing, but also travel, electricity and water. Applying modern solutions to traditional methods, for instance swapping from petrol to electric cars, can be a solid long-term investment.

Helps the planet

Being resource efficient can be hugely beneficial towards the planet by helping to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and improving the quality of life for people, wildlife, sea life and plantlife. Consider also what waste your business produces and where it goes. Waste that ends up in rivers and oceans can cause huge harm to ecosystems, which will have a knock-on effect on how our planet functions.
