This resource awareness course is designed to give you the knowledge to take positive steps forward with your water sustainability, energy sustainability, and waste management, so you can apply it to your home life and share it in the workplace as well.
This modular 3-part course is aimed at businesses and organisations who are looking to improve their environmental standing not just through their own actions, but also by providing direct support to their employees, so they can make a positive impact at home, and maintain that throughout the workday.
Individuals who are looking to make a change to become more sustainable and eco-friendly will also benefit greatly from this course, which can help them find simple and actionable solutions to long-term sustainability issues.
This course, known as ResourceAware, can be accessed at any time through the Rio Engage platform. There are no practical activities or workshops to be taken in this course, and everything you need to complete this course is also available through Rio Engage. A course tutor is also readily available to help you answer any questions you may have during the course.
This course comes in three parts, which you can pick up and put down as and when you need.

Why is it important to be able to manage sustainability at home and in the workplace?
It may be some time until businesses and governments around the world take the required steps to improve sustainability, reduce reliance on fossil fuels, and create and work towards new legislation that enforces those transitions. Until that time, we can still do our best to live eco-friendly and sustainable lives, hopefully reducing damage from major issues like single-use plastic reliance by simply buying loose fruit and vegetables, and using a refill shop.
Having teams trained in sustainability can also be greatly beneficial to businesses. Recycling drives, team workshops and nature days can have a dual benefit:
- They can improve your team's outlook towards sustainability, and give a greater appreciation of nature.
- These events can be used to improve the overall reputation of your business through social media and other marketing efforts. As long as you are taking active steps towards other sustainability initiatives and goals as a business alongside these team sustainability efforts, you can avoid accusations of greenwashing.

There are a number of ways you can practice sustainability at home, with this eLearning course expanding on the below points.
- Avoid disposable items like single-use plastics, plastic cutlery, coffee cups, and other single-use items.
- Reduce the amount you travel by car. Consider public transport or travel by bike or foot.
- Learn how to recycle properly.
- Use homemade cleaning products, free of dangerous chemicals.
- Cut down on the amount of energy you use, or look into green alternatives like solar panels.
- Build a sustainable garden, with bug-friendly spaces.
- Be conscious of your water usage.
- Adopt a flexitarian diet, reducing or avoiding meat.
- Buy fewer items, like clothing, if you don’t need them.
- Buy products with no packaging or reduced packaging, like loose fruit and vegetables.
- Shop locally, and support small businesses like greengrocers.
- Avoid food waste.
Refill shopping is where you take your own containers to a local refill shop (usually small independent businesses), and fill the containers with what you need instead of buying a pre-packaged product. This massively reduces the amount of waste created in the home, while still allowing access to staples like rice, pasta, cooking oils and other eco-friendly alternatives. Refill shops are becoming increasingly popular, with pressure building on supermarkets to begin offering their own refill stations.
