University of Kent

Founded in 1965, the University of Kent has two main campus locations – Canterbury and Medway. In 2017, the university was named 21st in the Times Higher Education (THE) 'Table of Tables'.

It has 20,000 students and generates an annual income of £267m per annum; producing approximately 2,000 tonnes of waste annually.

"We were impressed by Ditto Sustainability’s experience and track record in the public sector and the drive to understand our key operational and sustainability drivers. We currently use Ditto Sustainability's software as an integral component of our resource and waste management strategy. It has helped us to educate our staff in the core principles of waste management and it's a highly visual way for us to monitor our performance against the waste hierarchy and control our expenditure in line with targets."

- Juliet Thomas, Assistant Director of Estates, University of Kent

The Challenge

The university produced a wide variety of waste streams across its estate which made compliance management challenging and resource intensive.

Added to this were the increasing costs of waste management, requirements for a more robust contract monitoring procedure and the need for a formalised waste strategy.

Our Solution

Ditto Sustainability worked very closely with the university, using our software to develop a legal register of every waste management related legislation impacting the university.

We developed a robust policy and strategy, and Ditto Sustainability guided the university through a new waste management contract procurement process; training key university and contractor staff.

These actions resulted in:

  • A 26% reduction in waste produced per annum.

  • Over 68% of its waste recycled.

  • An 84% reduction in carbon footprint from waste management activities.

  • Over 40% cost savings on previous year spend.

  • A 75% spend saving on consultancy by using Ditto Sustainability's software.
